CIVILIAN PEACEKEEPING AND DEPLOYMENT IN CONFLICT SITUATIONS
August 2 – 30th 2007, in CLUJ-NAPOCA, ROMANIA

Interpositioning simulation Our highly-professionalized training program is designed for applicants interested in peace team work in conflict zones, with a background in international or cross-cultural work, human rights, and nonviolent approaches to conflict transformation.

The training covers teamwork, communication skills, accompaniment principles, observation and monitoring skills, nonviolence, the work of NP and its role in the field, conflict analysis, gender and cross-cultural dynamics, power and privilege issues relevant to NP's work, security concerns, trauma and stress management, first aid and practical simulation exercises.

Certified participants of this training program will be considered for Nonviolent Peaceforce civilian peacekeeping teams in Sri Lanka and the Philippines, and for future deployments, including Colombia and Northern Uganda.

Criteria for selection:

  • At least 21 years of age and in good health (ability to work in a tropical climate)
  • Fluent English, written and spoken
  • International and intercultural experience
  • Good team worker
  • Knowledge and skills in conflict transformation or peacekeeping work
  • Motivated to work in an organisation based on the principles of nonviolence, and are supportive of Nonviolent Peaceforce's mission
  • Willing to live in shared housing with very basic standard of comfort
  • Able to deploy for a minimum of two years OR be a member of a reserve, able to deploy for a period of six months during the next three years.

You accept that the position is unaccompanied but after six months field team members may apply for exception regarding adult partners and/or children twelve years old or over.

Cost of training :

The cost of training is 1,850 EUR (2,500 USD), boarding included and airfare excluded. Participants can apply for a limited number of scholarships. Priority criteria will be given by the GNP of the country of origin, by the recommendation of a Member Organisation of NP and by the personal and professional situation of the applicant.

 
About the trainers

Robert Rivers is a trainer and specialist in peacebuilding and conflict transformation with the Peace Action Training and Resource Institute of Romania (PATRIR). Since 2005, he is co-coordinator of the EU-funded Associations and Resources for Conflict Management Skills. For three years, he worked in Latin America as program manager and peace education coordinator for various community development and empowerment initiatives. Since 2000, he has provided nearly 100 training programs to more than 1500 participants in El Salvador, Mexico, the United States, Austria, Romania, Israel, and Moldova/Transdniestria, regarding various topics such as peacebuilding, community development, nonviolent intervention in conflict, peace education, and leadership for authentic democracy.

Monica Alfred is one of the first Rotary World Peace Scholars from Sri Lanka; she is a trainer and facilitator on non-violent conflict resolution and psychosocial support. She has an undergraduate degree from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, MA and MPhil in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies from Bradford University, UK. She is one of the Tutors for Action Asia conducting a MA in Applied Conflict Transformation studies at Pannasastra University, Cambodia. Monica has conducted two trainings in 2005 and 2006 for NP Sri Lanka.

Fatima Swartz is a consultant in conflict transformation and organizational development, and has over 27 years of grassroots community development experience in South Africa, including knowledge and skills in training, facilitation, and curriculum development. An educator for over 15 years in a variety of interracial and cross-cultural environments, she has been extremely successful as a coordinator and manager for several youth programs, both in South Africa and abroad. Fatima will bring her experiences as a mediator, an educator and her personal experiences in team building and leadership to the training.

Robert, Monica and Fatima are certified field team trainers for Nonviolent Peaceforce; they will be joined by a field team representative, Angela Pinchero, who is Nonviolent Peaceforce Project Manager in Sri Lanka.

This training is jointly funded by Nonviolent Peaceforce and by the European Union through funding provided to ARCA.
