Team Locations

Batticaloa
One team is based in Batticaloa town. Batticaloa is the regional centre of the district with the same name, a district populated mostly by Tamils and Muslims, with some parts of it still under control of the LTTE. In 2007 much of the fighting between the Sri Lankan Army, the split-away so-called Karuna faction and the LTTE happened in this district. Batticaloa town is also the basis for the Sri Lankan Programme Manager of NP.

Valaichchenai
Valiachchenai is a small town an hour North of Batticaloa town. This area has experienced violence and NP Deployments on Sri Lanka Map - selection tension arising from Muslim - Tamil clashes as well as from recruitment of children by the LTTE. The team there is working with Muslim and Tamil community groups on the borders between ethnically segregated areas as well as dealing with IPD and child abduction issues.

Trincomalee
Another team is based in this Eastern coastal district whose ethnic mix is divided almost equally between Muslims, Sinhalese and Tamils. This team is currently also covering as a district team Muthur Town on the southern edge of Trincomalee Bay where NP earlier had a separate team. The Muthur area has experienced the highest number of deaths through violence since the start of the ceasefire in December 2001. The tensions have arisen from disputes between Muslim and Tamil communities in the area. The team intends to provide protection to communities under threat and to work with community leaders seeking to reduce tension.

Jaffna
NP is having a team in Jaffna town on the peninsula, at the northernmost tip of the island. Government forces took most of the peninsula from the LTTE in 1996. The peninsula has a population which is almost 100% Tamil, many of whom have been displaced by virtue of the Government converting about a third of the land under their control into military areas, known as High Security Zones. Tensions in the area arise from civilian resentment at the military presence, LTTE taxes on businesses and imports into the area as well as from allegations of forced recruitment by the LTTE.

Colombo
Colombo is the seat of the Sri Lanka Office of NP, with Project Director, Human Resource Manager, Communication Manager, Finance Manager and several more support staff. In 2007, a small 1-2 person field team has been established in addition in Colombo to follow-up with issues arising in the other districts at the level of the capital,as well as dealing with increased requests for accompaniment by threatened people in Colombo where the number of disappearances has increased enormously over the last year.
