Planning for a Nonviolent Peaceforce deployment
Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) has a set procedure for developing new projects:
A project proposal that comes to NP from a member organisation, another NGO or a regional working group, for example, is discussed in the International Governing Council (IGC) Strategy Committee . This committee decides if NP will begin an exploration.
An exploration can be a several-week visit by a small team of researchers. The team puts together a formal proposal that includes an assessment of the conflict, an invitation requesting NP’s assistance from one or several local NGOs, and an assessment of the possible impact of a deployment by NP.
This proposal then goes before the Programme Committee for discussion and revision. If approved by the Programme Committee, the proposal is sent to the Executive Committee. If the Executive Committee approves the proposal, it will go to the International Governing Council (IGC). The IGC is the body in NP which makes the decision for all field projects.

After the IGC has approved a project, NP begins to identify funding and initiates fundraising to make the project possible. Implementation of a new project only starts once sufficient funds have been found. The period between approval and implementation may include sending a fundraiser to the country and other preliminary work done by individuals or very small teams.
A More Rapid Response
As you see, this process can take several months at minimum. For urgent requests, such as our recent project in Guatemala, we have developed our Rapid Response plan. For Rapid Response projects, these steps are shortened. The essential parts remain: writing a proposal, submitting it to the Programme Committee for assessment, and a decision by the International Governing Council. An important caveat: these projects can only be implemented once the necessary money has been secured.
In this section here planned projects are listed - these are projects that have been tentatively approved by the IGC without secured funding. Our only pending project is currently Uganda.
